Ocular Pain Overview

Eye pain can be caused by many different types of injuries and medical conditions. There are two basic classifications for eye pain: ocular pain and orbital pain. Orbital pain involves deeper structures of the eye and is often felt as pain behind the eye. Some of the causes of orbital pain include optic neuritis, glaucoma and irisitis. Ocular pain involves surface eye structures and is felt as pain in the front of the eye and the eyelids. The structures that are sensitive to pain in the front of the eye include the cornea, the inside of the eyelids and the outer rim of the eyelids. Some of the causes of ocular pain and discomfort include corneal abrasions, conjunctivitis, blepharitis, corneal burns and sties.

If you are experiencing unexplained eye pain, see your doctor or ophthalmologist immediately. Medical treatment may be necessary for some conditions that cause eye pain. Other eye conditions may be treatable at home, but always get the opinion of your doctor. Eye pain in the front of the eye or the eyelids may occur along with other symptoms such as excessive eye watering, feeling as though there is something inside of the eye, eye redness, inflammation and eye itching. Eye pain in the back of the eye may occur along with migraine or sinus headaches in some cases.

In some cases, eye pain can be prevented. It is important to wear protective safety goggles when working with chemicals, doing some types of work, doing certain activities and playing certain sports to prevent eye traumatic injuries and chemical burns. Make sure to follow the safety guidelines of your situation and wear the proper equipment for the job or activity. It is also important to wear UV-protection for the eyes when tanning, using an arc welder or spending time outside on sunny days to prevent flash burns to the eyes. If you wear contact lenses, make sure that your contact lenses are cleaned properly with sterile solution and take them out at night to prevent eye infections. Avoid rubbing your eyes with dirty hands to prevent possible infections, such as conjunctivitis. Other tips for eye pain prevention include getting regular eye exams, keeping your blood pressure under control to prevent glaucoma and keeping your blood glucose levels under control if you have diabetes.
